Back in October, Nothing unveiled Essential Apps – AI-generated mini-apps and widgets based on prompts, that will live on your device and can be shared with others through Nothing’s Playground community platform.

Today, Nothing is announcing the rollout of Essential Apps Beta, following the Alpha release from late 2025, which was only available for a small group of early adopters. With the Beta, access is gradually expanding through a waitlist, with users added in batches.

Create apps shaped exactly around your specific needs and context.

    That’s what Essential Apps are.

You describe what you need. AI builds it. It appears on your phone’s home screen, ready to use.

The early Beta is only available on the Nothing Phone (3) “because it has the performance to launch multiple Essential Apps” while Nothing refines the system. In the future, the Beta will also be available on other Nothing and CMF devices running Nothing OS 4.0 and above.

Right now, Essential Apps fully support three permissions: Location, Calendar (read only), and Contacts. So you can build stuff like location-based reminders, agenda views, meeting countdowns, and one-tap contact widgets. More capabilities are promised for the future, including camera and microphone access, network fetching, notifications, vibration, calling, and Bluetooth.

Nothing says that an OS update coming in late February will unlock activity recognition, usage statistics, sensor data, and its first system Weather API. To use Essential Apps, you simply describe what you want (within the constraints outlined above) in plain language and the AI-powered Apps Builder will create it. When you edit something, only those specific parts update, and your app stays stable and will get more reliable over time.

Essential Apps will “move to public release later this year”, Nothing says, “once system integrations are stable and device compatibility is confirmed”. Throughout the Beta stage, the platform will continue to “gain deeper system integrations, expanded design capabilities, and broader device support”.
