Google Home Premium and the first thing it did was tell me my dog was scratching the yard

My phone rang. “Animal Detected.” Again.

That’s it. No name, no location, no indication of whether the “animal” was one of my two spaniels, Izzy, and Phoebe, patrolling, or a squirrel running up one of my trees. Just “Animal Detected,” a uselessly vague home security notification.

I’ve been staring at variations of that since I installed my third-generation Google Nest Doorbell last fall. So when Google quietly started rolling out a software update that was something completely different, I had to try it. I pulled up Google Home on my iPhone, tapped the microphone, and asked: “Hey Google, where is the dog?”

The answer came back in plain English with a clip. Not just a timestamp. An actual sentence: She was near the mailbox and had been there for about five minutes.

She wasn’t supposed to be there, which meant she wasn’t wearing her boundary collar. That was the moment I understood what Google Home Premium is actually trying to be, and why it matters.

To put my experience in context, it’s worth stepping back and considering what exactly Google Home Premium is.

In late 2025, Google retired the Nest Aware branding and relaunched its home security subscription as Google Home Premium. The rebranding wasn’t just cosmetic: it represented a move from passive video storage to active, AI-driven awareness. In doing so, it further integrated the product with the company’s Gemini ecosystem.

There are two tiers. Home Premium Standard costs $10 per month and includes 30 days of event history and access to Gemini Live conversations through your Google speakers. It’s a solid foundation, but the real story is Home Premium Advanced at $20 per month, which showcases prominent features: Live Search, Home Briefs, and 10 days of continuous 24/7 recording rather than event-only clips.

There’s another wrinkle worth mentioning if you’re already paying for Google AI Pro or Ultra, which are incredibly useful: Google Home Premium Advanced is bundled in. Therefore, if you are already a heavy power user who already lives in that ecosystem, you are essentially getting a free upgrade to your home security setup. That’s a terrific move on Google’s part and lowers the barrier to trying new features that most people wouldn’t otherwise pay for.

Many have grown to love the new features, and I’m one of them.

Gemini isn’t as useless as it was when you tried it two years ago

AI that I first despised is now my Google Assistant replacement.

Google Home Premium Live Search: Ask your cameras anything

Familiar Pet Detection: Teaching Google Home to recognize your animals

The technology built on Gemini 1.5 Flash running on your camera feeds, allows it to process what Google calls “visual queries.” Instead of scrolling through footage or waiting for the app to surface a relevant clip, you just ask. The camera understands the question and finds the answer in your video history.

What I would call traditional alerts requires knowing what others look for; Live Search, by contrast, lets you simply ask, “Is the dog digging in the roses,” or “Did a neighbor’s cat come through today?” and get a direct answer.

Gemini also brings improved animal recognition through what Google is now calling “Familiar Pet” detection, which builds off its Known Face technology. It’s currently an “early access” feature, but if you’re using Google Home Premium Advanced, you can set it up in the Google Home app on your phone. The system learns your specific animals over time, so it can distinguish your dog (or cat) from a drifter like the neighbor’s cat that often gets loose. That contextual layer is what makes the answers feel intelligent rather than just technically accurate.

Google Home Premium features beyond Live Search

Ask Home and Help Me Create: AI automation without the learning curve

While Live Search is the showcase, a range of useful features, including Home Brief and intelligence routines, make Google Home Premium a daily essential.

Home Briefs, for example, summarizes camera activity at the end of each day. “Your dog Izzy was outside for four hours, and the mail arrived at 2 p.m., and Samantha arrived home at 3:20 p.m.” There’s no scrubbing footage here, just a quick, readable summary.

The Ask Home feature inside the Google Home app is always worth your time. It extends Live Search into a full chatbot experience for your video history. It might sound gimmicky until you try asking something like, “When did I last see my keys on the kitchen counter?” and the app knows the answer. If you’ve ever spent 20 minutes looking for your keys or wallet, you will realize just how useful a feature like this can be for your daily life.

And finally, there’s Help Me Create, which lets you create automation routines with simple text prompts. “If Phoebe stays by the front door for more than two minutes, pulse the kitchen light to inform me she’s ready to go inside.” You describe what you want Gemini to do, and it immediately builds a routine with no logic trees or trigger menus, just a conversation.

Google Home Premium compatibility: What cameras and devices you need

Does Google Home Premium work with older Nest Cams?

Not every camera in the Google ecosystem will give you the full experience. Google Home Premium’s 2026 features are optimized for third-generation Nest Cams and will work best with the newest Google Home Speaker, which is set to arrive later this year. The best way to tell whether your equipment supports all of the new features is, not surprisingly, to ask Gemini through the Google Home app.

There’s also the question of privacy: Live Search queries are handled on the cloud rather than on-device, which could be a no-go for some users. It’s best to check Google’s latest privacy policies (which often change) before making a purchase to see if you’re comfortable with how it uses your information.

Is Google Home Premium Advanced Worth $20 a Month?

At $20 per month, Google Home Premium Advanced represents a move from passive recording to active intelligence. While the price point might feel steep, and yeah, when we’re all paying for other monthly subscriptions like Netflix and Disney+, it is. However, if you’re already a Google Home user or want to take advantage of the latest smart home features, it’s at least worth checking out. Besides, Google typically offers a 30-day free trial of the Google Home Premium subscription when you set up an eligible new device, so there’s at least a way to check out the new tools and spend absolutely nothing.
