Every year, I visit family for a month over the holidays, knowing full well that I am entering an entertainment black hole. Being based overseas, I found that single-household-per-streaming-account rules throttle any attempts to circumvent them, even with a quality VPN, so I resigned myself to using the free services available on my Amazon Fire TV Stick for the foreseeable future. I expected a downgrade, with endless ads, low-quality content, and a frustrating viewing experience, but what I found was surprisingly different. Free streaming felt less like scrolling fatigue and more like rediscovering TV as I remember it, where you…

I bring a lot of audio gear home to review. Part of my testing often includes allowing my wife and adult “kids” to listen, and more often than not, while my sons are impressed, my wife is unbothered. When I had her sit down and listen to Fosi Audio’s new i5 planar magnetic headphones and ZH3 desktop DAC/Amp, I was surprised to find that she was blown away! She said that it sounded like she was listening to live music! That is high praise, coming from someone who is not easily moved by shiny, new gadgets. As I went through my…

Microsoft says the March Windows 11 update breaks sign-ins with Microsoft accounts across multiple Microsoft apps, including Teams and OneDrive. These sign-in issues appear after installing the KB5079473 cumulative update Microsoft released last week as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday, and, according to a Windows release health dashboard update published on Wednesday, will trigger warnings that the impacted devices are not connected to the Internet. The list of affected applications also includes Microsoft Edge, Excel, Word, and Microsoft 365 Copilot, which will display the same error message for features that require a Microsoft account sign-in. “As a result of…

I’ve recently built a new sit-stand desk for my home office, and I always wanted to keep my PC on the floor. That begged the question of which cables I would run all the way from the tabletop to the PC, which’s almost 10 feet or two meters away when the desk’s fully extended. I ran the AC power cords for my display and mini PC, along with one DisplayPort cable, and a USB from the under-desk USB switcher to my PC. This was a sort of acid test to see how long my cables could be while retaining full…

As a decade-long user of Android phones, my Android home screen keeps getting worse the more I use my phone. It has nothing to do with hardware or sluggishness. The problem is very simple and straightforward. Everything just piles up. Between new apps, widgets that I try out once in a while, and folders that I create to get some semblance of organization, at some point my phone stops feeling like a tool and more clutter. For a while I accepted it for what it is. But then I made the switch to Niagara launcher. The goal behind it was…

The early deals of the Amazon Big Spring Sale aren’t all about headphones and smart home gear — there’s something here for bookworms too. Amazon has dropped the Kindle Colorsoft 16GB to just $169.99 ahead of the event, matching the lowest price we last saw during last year’s Black Friday frenzy. Kindle Colorsoft 16GB for $169.99 ($80 off)This is the more affordable version of Amazon’s color Kindle, which launched last year as a cheaper alternative to the Signature Edition. It drops a few extras like wireless charging and halves the storage, but otherwise you’re getting the same experience — including…

An information stealer called VoidStealer uses a new approach to bypass Chrome’s Application-Bound Encryption (ABE) and extract the master key for decrypting sensitive data stored in the browser. The novel method is stealthier and relies on hardware breakpoints to extract the v20_master_key,  used for both encryption and decryption, directly from the browser’s memory, without requiring privilege escalation or code injection. A report from Gen Digital, the parent company behind the Norton, Avast, AVG, and Avira brands, notes that this is the first case of an infostealer observed in the wild to use such a mechanism. Google introduced ABE in Chrome…

While Google has plans to severely restrict Android users’ ability to download apps from sources other than the Google Play Store, the company is introducing a new process that will allow sideloading after a mandatory 24-hour waiting period. This new “advanced flow” setting is meant to prevent users from installing malware distributed by bad actors through unverified sources, while still allowing them to sideload from legitimate developers.Sideloading restrictions are coming to AndroidLast year, Google announced that sideloading on Android would eventually be limited to verified third-party app stores and developers. This change has a clear goal: cracking down on malicious…
