How to Optimize Your Content for LLMs With Semrush

Semrush research shows that AI systems cite content more often when it reads clearly, proves credibility, and is easy to extract.

That’s because LLMs (large language models) don’t rank pages like traditional search engines.

They extract passages with clear answers and summarize sections from sources they trust.

That means optimizing content for AI visibility comes down to structuring it in a way that models can interpret quickly and reuse with confidence.

The AI Search Optimizer on Semrush helps you rewrite your content to make it more citable by platforms like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews.

Step 1: Choose High-Priority Pages to Optimize for AI Search

When choosing pages to optimize, pick ones that already rank on search or drive traffic. AI platforms are more likely to cite content that search engines already trust.

Choose a page that meets these criteria:

    • It already ranks on Google for relevant queries, even if the ranking has slipped.
    • It supports conversions or influences buying decisions, such as product pages, comparisons, or how-it-works explainers (but wouldn’t impact revenue if it lost rankings).
    • It covers high-intent topics your brand wants to own long-term.
    • It feels slightly outdated and needs a refresh or has started to underperform.

Once you’ve picked a page, open AI Search Optimizer and load your article into the workflow.

You can enter a URL, paste text from your clipboard, or select an article already saved on your Board.

After you confirm the page to rewrite, Semrush starts analyzing it for areas to improve.

Step 2: Run an AI Search Optimization Analysis

At this stage, Semrush checks how easy your page is for AI systems to read and cite. It evaluates structure, formatting, clarity, and E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authority, and trustworthiness) signals.

These checks are based on Semrush’s analysis of over 300,000 URLs cited by AI platforms.

When the report finishes, you get a prioritized set of recommended improvements that tells you exactly what to fix next.

From here, you can prioritize the improvements that will have the biggest impact first.

Step 3: Review and Prioritize AI SEO Improvements

Start with the highest-impact recommendations first; a few targeted fixes can quickly make your content far easier for AI systems to cite.Treat this list like a triage queue.

A list of recommended improvements for better AI optimization

The top recommendations flag the most common issues that prevent AI citations:

    • Answers that appear too late in a section.
    • Important concepts mentioned without context.
    • Sections that mix multiple ideas without clear headings.
    • Dense paragraphs that would be hard to skim or quote.

Click “improve all” to apply every suggestion at once, or apply recommendations one by one. Semrush will then rewrite those sections for you.

If your content doesn’t trigger a specific check, it’s already optimized for AI and you won’t see that recommendation in the list.

Step 4: Clarify Important Concepts and References

AI systems cite content they can parse and extract cleanly. When your page references a concept, product, person, or method without defining it, AI can’t confidently use your content as a source.

One way to help search engines and AI systems understand your content is by adding schema markup (structured data) to help define important entities.

In AI Search Optimizer, Semrush flags important concepts or terms where you haven’t added structured data markup to help define them.

A simple approach often works best: introduce the concept in one sentence, then explain why it matters in the next.

And use the proper markup for entities like products, organizations, and articles.

Step 5: Restructure Sections So Answers Are Easy to Extract

AI systems cite content that’s easy to scan and summarize.

Long lead-ins, generic headings, and dense paragraphs make it harder for models to isolate a clean takeaway.

In fact, Semrush’s study found that pages AI systems cited were 22.91% more likely to have strong section structure than similar pages that weren’t cited.

In AI Search Optimizer, structure-related recommendations often point to the same problems:

    • Headings that describe the topic, but not the takeaway.
    • Sections that mix multiple ideas without a clear order.
    • Paragraphs that run too long to skim or quote.
AI SEO recommendations for a clearer summary at the start

A good fix starts with a clearer heading, then a one to two-sentence summary at the top of the section. Semrush’s study found that pages AI systems cited were 32.83% more likely to include clear summaries and easy-to-scan takeaways than similar pages that weren’t cited.

From there, break supporting details into short paragraphs or lists so AI can extract and reuse them cleanly.

Pro tip: Is your article structured so a human can easily scan it for key concepts? If not, keep optimising, because AI will probably struggle too.

Step 6: Add Direct Answers Where Questions Are Implied

With every search, there’s a question implied. AI systems favor citing content that answers those questions directly and early.

Semrush’s study found a 25.45% correlation between AI citations and question-and-answer formatting.

In AI Search Optimizer, recommendations in this area appear when a section discusses a topic without directly answering the underlying question.

If a section heading sounds like a topic rather than a question, you can often tighten it by reframing it as something people actually ask.

How Do You Optimize Existing Content for AI Citations?

Add a question-style subheading, then answer it directly in one or two sentences immediately underneath. After the direct answer, you can add supporting details, examples, or steps.

    Like this page:

If you need inspiration for questions, run your topic through Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool and check the Questions tab.

Step 7: Strengthen Trust Signals With Clear Expertise

AI systems cite content more often when it shows clear expertise and credible sourcing.

In Semrush’s study, pages that earned AI citations showed a 30.64% correlation with stronger E-E-A-T signals.

AI SEO Improvements recommending credibility cues

In AI Search Optimizer, trust-related recommendations focus on practical fixes:

    • Add an author bio that explains relevant experience.
    • Support key claims with reliable source links, especially when you mention numbers or strong statements.
An author bio clearly displayed in a blog post

Include the author’s years of experience and work history to build authority for your article quickly.

Step 8: Save, Compare, and Track AI Visibility Over Time

    AI optimization isn’t one-and-done.

Once you apply your improvements, save the updated version on your board so you can compare it with the original.

This makes it easier to see what changed and which edits made the page clearer, more structured, or more credible.

Board showing the original and optimized versions saved as separate cards for comparison

The workflow saves versions so you can review progress without losing earlier drafts.

Over time, track how well your content gets cited by monitoring a set of target prompts. When a prompt’s visibility drops, re-optimize the page using the same workflow.

Use Semrush’s Prompt Tracking to monitor your visibility for a set of important prompts, then re-optimize the pages that stop getting cited.

Start AI Visibility with Clarity, Not Guesswork

AI Search Optimizer turns vague AI optimization advice into prioritized edits you can apply in minutes.

If you feel stuck, start small and pick one useful page that needs a refresh, then run it through the workflow.

The best way to build momentum is to get started, see what the tool flags, and apply the top fix.
