Plex redesign comes to Fire TV, including remote streaming limits

Plex is rolling out its redesigned app to Amazon Fire TV devices, including some important upgrades — as well as the remote streaming restrictions that have irked some people.

As on other platforms, Plex no longer offers free remote play options. To watch away from home, you’ll either need a Plex Pass ($7 per month, $70 per year, or $250 lifetime) as the server owner, or a Remote Watch Pass ($2 per month or $20 per year).

The subscription requirement first came to mobile devices, Roku players, and the desktop. On March 23rd, Plex began enforcing the policy for consoles and other TV operating systems, including LG, Samsung, and Vizio sets. The change is expected to reach all TV platforms by the end of 2026.

The overhaul does include useful changes, including faster navigation, better use of space, centralized account info, and editing artwork directly from the TV. Music is supported in this Fire TV release, but Plex warns that photo libraries aren’t immediately available and that it will restore support “as soon as we can.”

Why is Plex limiting remote streaming?

Plex was direct when it announced the remote play restrictions in March 2025. The company said it “need[ed] more resources” to develop its vision of personal media playback, including both new features and support for existing capabilities.

At the time, the brand outlined a roadmap that it used to justify the need for subscriptions. Plex Pass subscribers would get better filtering for child-friendly content, while server owners would get a custom app that offered better user management. Plex also promised an open programming framework to integrate servers into other products and services.

The move nonetheless drew criticism from users who now found themselves having to pay for a feature that was previously free. Early on, there were also complaints about an awkward user experience.

As before, the easiest solution short of leaving Plex is to subscribe to the Remote Watch Pass. This enables remote play from anywhere without making you pay extra for Plex Pass features you don’t necessarily need, such as media downloads, more server controls, and intro skipping.
