    Summary

    • AMD says it’s ready to support a next-gen Xbox launch in 2027, but Microsoft hasn’t confirmed.
    • Lisa Su clarified AMD’s SoC work supports a 2027 window, not an explicit Microsoft launch date.
    • Rumors say the next Xbox may run a Windows 11 variant to unify PC, handheld, and console gaming.

There have been whispers of a new Xbox console on the horizon. While Microsoft hasn’t explicitly stated that a new Xbox is on the way, we’ve heard whispers that the company is planning something with its gaming hardware. Yes, despite letting go of its exclusives and going for a cross-platform strategy, Microsoft isn’t going to duck out of hardware anytime soon.

Now, we’ve heard a hint that there might be plans to release a new Xbox sometime in 2027. And while the hint doesn’t outright confirm that one will arrive, it does come from a very reputable source.

Although nothing definitive has been confirmed just yet

The Xbox Series X's on button

As spotted by The Verge, the CEO of AMD, Lisa Su, has confirmed that the company is prepping for a potential console release. The last time we heard progress on a new console, Microsoft confirmed that it and AMD had entered a partnership to get one made. Now, during an earnings call delivered today, Lisa had some good news to share:

“Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox, featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC, is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.”

Before you get too excited, it’s worth noting how Lisa Su worded this statement. Note how she says that AMD is ready to “support a launch in 2027.” What she’s saying is that, if Microsoft wanted to release a new Xbox in 2027, AMD would be ready to handle their request. It’s not a direct confirmation that an Xbox console will be released during that year.

At the same time, I don’t see a reason why Microsoft will want to delay the release of a new console. Right now, the Xbox Series X and S, while fine by themselves, don’t align with Microsoft’s rumored focus. We’ve heard sources claim that the next Xbox console will run a modified version of Windows 11, showing that Microsoft wants to turn its operating system into a one-size-fits-all solution. That way, it doesn’t matter if you’re using a PC, laptop, handheld, or console; you can stick Windows 11 on it, and you’re good to game.
